Removal of Metal Ions from Mine Effluents Using Bacterial Reactions by Sulfate Reducing Bacteria
Metals in mine effluents, especially metal mines, have been a major environmental concern. High mobility of the metals in solution and the subsequent lowering of discharge limits by the EPA have necessitated expensive chemical treatment of the effluent. Bacteriological reactions, particularly by Sulfate Reducing Bacteria, have been known to reduce metals content in water by precipitating them a...
متن کاملSimultaneous Electricity Generation and Sulfur Removal by Electrogenic Sulfate Reducing Bacteria in BES System
The modern BioElectrochemical technologies can convert the energy stored in the chemical bonds of biodegradable organic materials to renewable electrical energy through the catalytic reactions of microorganisms while treating the waste waters. The present research was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of a single-chamber Bioelectrochemical system with the carbon aerogel catalyst, as a simple...
متن کاملEnzymatic recovery of elemental palladium by using sulfate-reducing bacteria
Worldwide usage of platinum group metals is increasing, prompting new recovery technologies. Resting cells of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans reduced soluble Pd2+ to elemental, cell-bound Pd0 supported by pyruvate, formate, or H2 as the electron donor without biochemical cofactors. Pd reduction was O2 insensitive, opening the way for recycling and recovery of Pd under oxic conditions.
متن کاملGene Expression Correlates with Process Rates Quantified for Sulfate- and Fe(III)-Reducing Bacteria in U(VI)-Contaminated Sediments
Though iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria are well known for mediating uranium(VI) reduction in contaminated subsurface environments, quantifying the in situ activity of the microbial groups responsible remains a challenge. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the use of quantitative molecular tools that target mRNA transcripts of key genes related to Fe(III) and sulfate reduction pa...
متن کاملMetabolic Flexibility of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria
Dissimilatory sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRB) are a very diverse group of anaerobic bacteria that are omnipresent in nature and play an imperative role in the global cycling of carbon and sulfur. In anoxic marine sediments sulfate reduction accounts for up to 50% of the entire organic mineralization in coastal and shelf ecosystems where sulfate diffuses several meters deep into the sediment....
